RHA to Host Jobs, Job Training and Small Business Session
Roxboro Housing Authority (RHA) and Piedmont Community College (PCC) are set to hold an awareness session regarding training, employment and small business opportunities in Person County.
The orientation session takes place Thursday, September 19, 2019, at the Lee Gardens Community Center, 808 Lyle St., Roxboro. It starts at 3:30 PM. Admission is free and open to the public.
“The goal of this meeting is to spark an interest in our residents and others about working at local companies to get paid a good wage with benefits or to start a business in Person County,” said Executive Director Felts Lewis. “This is one of several self-sufficiency activities that Roxboro Housing Authority is offering through its partnership with PCC.”
Information presented shall describe and address training requirements to prepare for positions offered primarily by local manufacturing companies located in Person County. The Workforce Certification Academy (WCA) through PCC’s Human Resources Development Office assists individuals who are unemployed or underemployed to gain required skills.
PCC’s Small Business Development Center is also set to share information for individuals desiring to start a business. Updates about its revitalized off-campus facility on Main Street in uptown Roxboro will be shared.
PCC representatives also plan to answer questions about other opportunities offered by the college involving academic (associates degrees) and other continuing education options.
Over 80 public housing and non-public housing residents are currently on the Housing Authority’s Section 3 Program List. Section 3, part of the U.S. Housing Act of 1937, mandates that any entity receiving HUD funds must establish contracts, provide jobs and/or job training using low- and very-low income persons.
RHA residents are the primary target audience for Section 3; however, persons that live in an area where federal funds through HUD are spent also qualify, including citizens in Person, Caswell, Durham and other contiguous counties.
In addition to providing this effort, PCC and RHA partner to provide adult education classes weekly at Lee Gardens Community Center.
