RCRC Awarded Grant to Build Affordable Housing Units

ROXBORO, N.C.--N.C. Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA) awarded Roxboro Housing Authority's non-profit a $7 million grant to build and operate affordable housing units in Person Co.

Roxboro Village, sponsored by the Roxboro Community Redevelopment Corporation (RCRC), will provide 12 new rental homes for qualifying populations (homeless or prone-to-be-homeless), including six single-story duplex buildings on 4.85 acres of land at the end of Mt. Bethel Church St.

"Receiving the news that the affordable housing grant was awarded was a great start to the new year," said Felts Lewis, RHA executive director and RCRC president.  "After construction we will finally be able to address a growing need for affordable housing with wrap around services toward self-sufficiency."

NCHFA approved more than $43 million in funding for the development of rental homes in 12 communities for North Carolinians with special housing needed with additional units awarded this year.

The state agency awarded this funding through its Supportive Housing American Rescue Plan (SHARP) program to provide shelter, permanent housing and services to individuals experiencing homelessness and other housing insecurity. NCHFA created SHARP to administer HOME-ARP funds that were appropriated through the American Rescue Plan of 2021.

"The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency is committed to supporting our state's most vulnerable citizens," said Scott Farmer, NCHFA executive director. "We are proud to create programs and provide funding that will establish safe and affordable housing in communities statewide that can connect people with limited options to the services they need to lead happy, successful lives."

RCRC Ad-hoc Committee on Homelessness and others submitted over 20 support letters with the winning grant application. They came from the County, City, churches and various organizations to accompany the application, showing that local support is here for affordable housing projects.

A decision from NCHFA about awarding RCRC a grant to build a non-congregate shelter in Roxboro is expected in February 2024.
