Valentine's Bingo Aims to Reunite Senior Residents
Over 10 senior residents attended the Resident Opportunities Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) Program's first event of the new year, Valentine's Bingo, to encourage the agency's senior residents to interact with one another for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic.
The activity took place on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at 2:30 PM. The event ended when the last prize was awarded around 4:00 PM at Lee Gardens Community, 818 Lyle Street, Roxboro.
"COVID-19 has caused our seniors to become more shut in than ever during my five-year tenure," said Roxboro Housing Authority Executive Director Felts Lewis. "We want this and other activities targeting our senior residents to get them reconnected, using their renovated community center for some fun, and enlightening quality of life-enhancing programs and activities."
Along with bingo games, residents with a January or February birthday were recognized.
Attendees won prizes ranging from flowers to metal water bottles. Refreshments, music, and decorations helped create a festive atmosphere. Detric Woods, Weatherly Heights resident, kept the party going as the event emcee. Ms. Johnson, also a Weatherly Heights resident, sang an uplifting gospel song to close out the event.
Jonica Ragland, RHA's ROSS coordinator since December 2022, planned the event, and attending senior residents expressed their appreciation for her efforts. For more information about the ROSS program, contact Ms. Ragland at 336.583.5531.
